LASIK stands for LASER ASSISTED IN SITU KERATOMILEUSIS. This laser vision correction procedure can be used to treat myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia (Farsightedness) and Astigmatism. LASIK is a procedure that uses the “Cool” light from an Excimer laser to reshape the inner tissue of the cornea.
LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses and not, as is usually thought, designed to totally eliminate the spectacle power, which is often, impossible.
The accuracy of the post LASIK residual power is based on many factors like pre-operative high myopia or high astigmatism or corneas which are not perfectly symmetrical. The power will reduce to the level where you may not need to use glasses for over 85% of the time, but some residual power is to be expected.
You are eligible to undergo Lasik if :
▪ Your age is > 18yrs
▪ You have stable refractive error for >1 year
▪ Sufficiently thick corneas for safer ablation ▪ Your retina is normal
▪ You are not pregnant or breast feeding
▪ You have no health issues affecting your eyes
You should discontinue wearing
▪ Soft Contact Lenses – for 5 days before your evaluation and surgery
▪ Toric Soft Lenses – should be stopped at least 8 days prior the procedure
▪ Rigid (hard) or gas permeable (RGP) lenses – you should stop wearing them for at least 2 weeks before your initial evaluation
A complete eye examination will be performed to determine if you are a suitable candidate.
▪ Accurate Refraction
▪ Pachymetry - To measure the thickness of cornea
▪ Topography - This instrument enables a very accurate map of the cornea to be plotted out almost like the whorls and grooves of the fingerprint. This is individual to each eye and forms the basis of the entire procedure.
▪ Keratometry- To measure corneal curvature the keratometer evaluates the cornea for any irregularity or any surface defect and looks for keratoconus or corning of the cornea which would preclude LASIK, with an automatic detection system.
▪ Applanation Tonometry – To measure intraocular pressure.
▪ Indirect Opthalmoscopy – To rule out any retinal pathology.
▪ Other investigations to rule out any septic foci in the body
The day Before the LASIK procedure:
▪ You should start the antibiotic drops you have been given, and stop using any eye makeup, lash extenders, kajal, and surma.
▪ Please discontinue the use of any makeup, eye creams or lotions as they tend to work into the eye. You should have an early night.
▪ Try to minimize any exposure to excessive cigarette smoke or dust as for that day we want the eye completely quiet.
On the Day of the LASIK procedure:
▪ On the day of the procedure wash your face with hot water and lots of soap. Wash your eyes thoroughly with water prior to coming.
▪ Remember to bring all your papers, your fresh spectacle refraction, topography maps with you when you come for the LASIK.
▪ LASIK is true ambulatory procedure. There is no admission. You simply lie on the laser bed and once complete, you can walk out.
The actual laser time is literally measured in seconds. There is no pain at all. Numbing drops are all that is used.
LASIK is performed with the patient seated in a reclining chair in an outpatient surgical suite. First the eye is numbed with a few drops of topical anesthetic. An eyelid holder (called a speculum) is placed between the eyelids to keep them open and prevent you from blinking.
Step I : Using an instrument called microkeratome a thin flap of corneal tissue is made and folded back.
Step II : The excimer laser is applied which reshapes the corneal tissue.
Step III : The corneal flap is then placed back into its original position and allowed to dry. Antibiotic drops are applied and eyes are covered with a dark goggle. Both the eyes are usually treated together.
