LASIK stands for LASER ASSISTED IN SITU
KERATOMILEUSIS. This laser vision correction procedure can
be used to treat myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia
(Farsightedness) and Astigmatism. LASIK is a procedure that
uses the “Cool” light from an Excimer laser to reshape the
inner tissue of the cornea.
» What you need to understand about LASIK ?
LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to
reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses
and not, as is usually thought, designed to totally
eliminate the spectacle power, which is often, impossible.
The accuracy of the post LASIK residual power is based on
many factors like pre-operative high myopia or high
astigmatism or corneas which are not perfectly symmetrical.
The power will reduce to the level where you may not need to
use glasses for over 85% of the time, but some residual
power is to be expected.
» Am I a good candidate for LASIK ?
You are eligible to undergo Lasik if :
▪ Your age is > 18yrs
▪ You have stable refractive error for >1 year
▪ Sufficiently thick corneas for safer ablation
▪ Your retina is normal
▪ You are not pregnant or breast feeding
▪ You have no health issues affecting your eyes
You should discontinue wearing
▪ Soft Contact Lenses – for 5 days before your evaluation
and surgery ▪ Toric Soft Lenses – should be stopped at least 8
days prior the procedure ▪ Rigid (hard) or gas permeable (RGP) lenses – you
should stop wearing them for at least 2 weeks before your
Will I have to undergo any investigations
before surgery ?
A complete eye examination will be performed
to determine if you are a suitable candidate.
▪ Accurate Refraction ▪ Pachymetry - To measure the thickness of cornea ▪ Topography - This instrument enables a very
accurate map of the cornea to be plotted out almost like the
whorls and grooves of the fingerprint. This is individual
to each eye and forms the basis of the entire procedure. ▪ Keratometry- To measure corneal curvature the
keratometer evaluates the cornea for any irregularity or any
surface defect and looks for keratoconus or
corning of the cornea which would preclude LASIK, with an automatic
detection system. ▪ Applanation Tonometry – To measure intraocular
pressure. ▪ Indirect Opthalmoscopy – To rule out any retinal
pathology. ▪ Other investigations to rule out any septic foci in
If you fit into the prescribed criteria's
then only surgery can be performed
The day Before the LASIK procedure: ▪ You should start the antibiotic drops you have been
given, and stop using any eye makeup, lash extenders, kajal,
and surma. ▪ Please discontinue the use of any makeup, eye
creams or lotions as they tend to work into the eye. You
should have an early night. ▪ Try to minimize any exposure to excessive cigarette
smoke or dust as for that day we want the eye completely
On the Day of the LASIK procedure: ▪ On the day of the procedure wash your face with hot
water and lots of soap. Wash your eyes thoroughly with water
prior to coming. ▪ Remember to bring all your papers, your fresh
spectacle refraction, topography maps with you when you come
for the LASIK. ▪ LASIK is true ambulatory procedure. There is no
admission. You simply lie on the laser bed and once
complete, you can walk out. The actual laser time is literally measured in seconds. There is no
pain at all. Numbing drops are all that is used.
How is LASIK done?
LASIK is performed with the patient
seated in a reclining chair in an outpatient
surgical suite. First the eye is numbed with a few
drops of topical anesthetic. An eyelid holder
(called a speculum) is placed between the eyelids to
keep them open and prevent you from blinking.
Step I : Using an instrument called
microkeratome a thin flap of corneal tissue is made
and folded back.
Step II : The excimer laser is applied which
reshapes the corneal tissue.
Step III : The corneal flap is then placed back into
its original position and allowed to dry. Antibiotic
drops are applied and eyes are covered with a dark
goggle. Both the eyes are usually treated together.
Why at “NEW VISION LASIK CENTRE”?
We are an ISO 9001:2000 Certified
Organization. Health of your eyes is critical and their
safety is a fundamental requirement. Our Laser State of Art ALLEGRETTO WAVE EYE-Q (400Hz)
system has the following advantages compared to other
systems. It is a FDA approved machine.
Perfect Pulse Technology : This sophisticated technology
ensures that the entire treatment and each pulse of the
laser beam are completely controlled.
Eye Tracker: It constantly follows the eyes position. Laser
is only released if the eye is centered. So even when your
eye moves, the treatment remains perfectly centered.
Cyclotorsion control technology controls the eyes rotational
▪ Precision : This laser uses a very small laser beam
that shapes the eyes surface like a delicate brush. The
smooth shape of the beam creates an even surface across the
entire eye, once again shortening healing times and
providing precise results.
▪ Performance : With wave light Eye-Q 400 H2,
technology, the actual treatment time last only a few
seconds compared to often longer procedures (average 10-12
Sec) This faster technology gives shorter exposure for flap
and cornea, which in turn, reduces the risk of infection.
Also a quick treatment will reduce the healing and recovery
time, gives greater stability of post-operative results.
▪ Quality of Vision : This laser gives a better
quality of vision especially at night and with regards to
depth perception and contrast sensitivity.
▪ Superior Results : NASA Approves advanced LASIK for
Astronauts in 2008: NASA's approval is further evidence that
today's LASIK exceeds all established standards of safety
and effectiveness. NASA followed the Naval Aviation Clinical
studies closely with a particular interest in both safety
and quality of vision under extreme conditions.
▪ Advanced Lasik was proven to provide excellent safety
with consistent visual results of 20/20 or better.
LASIK was able to withstand even the most extreme rigors of
warfare and flight. All surgical procedures have risks, but
with this exceptional track record, the average consumer has
nothing to fear from “LASIK”
